How I started modelling
Modelling has come up in my life a few times over the last 15 years. Each time, my career in banking, technology and consulting came first. Last year my friends encouraged me to finally do it. It was their idea, really. I'm at a stage of life where I can take some risks, so I said yes.
Part of it is personal. I'd like to see more Asian men in Australian media, so that a younger version of me can see it and know it's an option if he wants it.
What I've learned
My first shoot was a portfolio shoot, to help me book work. I left it to other people to decide the style and the look. What I learned is that even on a new path, I need my own point of view. Working with experts is great, and it's still my brand, so I share my voice.
The other lesson: go after the projects you're genuinely excited about. It comes through in the work, in the small expressions and the body language.
The biggest surprise has been the people. I came from startups and scale-ups, and it turns out there are entrepreneurs all through the process of getting a shoot, a campaign or a TV commercial made. Everyone has a story.
One of them is Louis, an actor and photographer I first met as a guest on the podcast. We clicked straight away. He's helped me with my self-tapes and shot updates to my portfolio, and those photos are the ones I use for castings today. They've booked me work.
Plenty of creatives gave their time this year to help build my portfolio. I'm grateful to every one of them, and they're warm memories I'll keep for a long time.
In the past year I've shot for Et Al, Optiqueline Convertibles, GANT, Julius Marlow,
Chemist Warehouse and Mercedes Benz.
Before this
I grew up in Canada, the child of Chinese immigrants, and spent years working in Sweden before settling in Melbourne.
On the podcast
Founders and Funders is about the stories that deserve more attention than they get. Listen Here.
Surf Coaching
I got into surf coaching as a volunteer, helping kids and adults manage anxiety and depression. It's helped me with my own mental health through some difficult times too.
away from work
I like exploring suburbs, shops and restaurants, and a good swim where I can block out all the noise. Or a nice meal with a friend.
And walks with Joanie, my greyhound. I adopted her during COVID, and she's my first dog. She's taught me a lot about empathy, compassion, humility and generosity.
